Preparations for the inaugural men’s international Netball championship to be hosted in one of the Zone-VI countries are said to have now reached at an advanced stage in the northern region.

Over the past weekend, some men were incorporated into women’s teams during a tournament that was held at Katoto Sports Complex in Mzuzu and attracted teams from Karonga, Rumphi and Mzuzu City.

One of the tournament organizers, Honest Mwandelire said Netball is a game for both men and women and that is a reason men were involved as part of preparation for an international competition to be held soon.

“Soon men will be invited for camp training in preparation for Zone-VI men’s Netball championship, we organized this tournament as one way of keeping them fit in preparation for the national camp training,” Mwandelire said.

Team Manager for Map Queens, Joy Maluwa appealed to well wishers to support Netball in the northern region in order to motivate both young and already established players to adopt the sport.

“Our colleagues in Blantyre and Lilongwe play Netball throughout the year because they get sponsorships from various companies, let me appeal to those willing to assist to come forward and motivate these young and already established players,” Maluwa appealed.

Netball teams in action

In November last year, the Netball Association of Malawi (NAM) announced that it had started recognizing men’s netball in the country.

During a virtual meeting the netball body also disclosed that it will appoint a committee which will be responsible for operationalization of men’s netball in the country.
